It is slower than advertising and it does not stop when you stop paying, which is the trade-off worth understanding before you start.
Roofing SEO
Most roofing work still starts with a local search, and most of those clicks go to the three businesses in the map pack. Everything below is about getting into that block of three and staying there.
Roofing SEO is the work of ranking a roofing contractor in Google's organic and map results for the services and towns it covers. A&B Consulting Group provides this for roofing and exterior contractors from our office in Burr Ridge, Illinois, serving Chicago and the western suburbs, and remotely for clients in 17 states.
The map pack is the prize
Three local results sit above the organic listings and take a large share of the clicks for "roof repair near me" and everything like it. Getting there depends on three things: a Google Business Profile that is genuinely managed rather than claimed and forgotten, review volume and recency, and location signals from your own site.
The profile work is unglamorous and continuous — services and hours kept accurate, fresh photography added monthly, Posts published on a schedule. It reads as an active business to Google and to the homeowner deciding whether to call.
Service area pages, done properly
This is where most roofers lose and where the biggest gains are. Homeowners search for a service plus a town. One page listing thirty towns ranks for none of them.
What works is a genuinely distinct page per market: real projects completed there, specifics about that area's housing stock and common problems, and internal links to the relevant services. What does not work is generating forty pages by swapping the town name — Google identifies that pattern easily and it can suppress the whole site rather than help it.
Reviews feed rankings as well as conversion
Review count and recency are prominence signals for local ranking, which makes reviews one of the few things that improves both how often you appear and how often you get picked once you do.
What works is a text sent while the crew is packing up, with a one-tap link straight to the review form. A steady trickle beats thirty in a week, which looks exactly like what it is.
Timeline, honestly
Google Business Profile improvements can show within a few weeks. New service area pages typically settle in two to four months. Competitive head terms take six to twelve, longer in a dense metro.
That makes SEO a poor choice if you need work next week and a good one if you want calls arriving in a year's time without paying per click for them. Most roofers run ads alongside it for exactly that reason.
Measuring it, so you can tell whether it worked
Rankings are a means, not the result. The number that matters is how many calls and form fills the site produced, and which pages produced them — which is why conversion tracking goes in before the content work starts rather than after.
Google Search Console is free, most roofers have never opened it, and it tells you exactly which queries you appear for, which pages Google indexed, and which it quietly skipped. Paired with call and form tracking, it answers the only question worth asking: did the work produce booked jobs.
Monthly reporting should lead with enquiries and name the pages that generated them. If the only evidence of a year of SEO is a PDF of ranking positions, that is a problem regardless of who is producing it.

Roofing SEO — questions we get asked
How long does roofing SEO take to work?
Profile improvements in weeks, service area pages in two to four months, competitive terms in six to twelve. The first three months are mostly building the asset; the returns arrive after. It works badly as a short experiment and well as a sustained commitment.
How do I get into the Google map pack for roofing?
Relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance. Relevance comes from correct categories, services and location signals. Prominence comes largely from reviews — count, recency and rating — plus citations and links. In practice, for most roofers the fastest lever is reviews.
Is SEO or Google Ads better for a roofing company?
Ads if you need the phone to ring this month; they turn on immediately and stop when the budget does. SEO if you want calls that keep arriving after you stop paying. Most roofers we work with run both, because ads cover the months while rankings build.
Do you guarantee first page rankings?
No, and be wary of anyone who does. Nobody controls Google's algorithm, and agencies that guarantee rankings usually guarantee terms so obscure that ranking for them is worth nothing. We commit to the work being visible: you see every page written, every fix made and every citation cleaned up.
How many Google reviews does a roofing company need?
There is no threshold — it is relative to the other companies in your map pack, and recency matters as much as count. Sixty reviews from this year beats a hundred from 2021. The useful exercise is counting what your three nearest map-pack competitors have.
Does blogging help a roofing company rank?
Content that answers what homeowners ask before they hire helps. Generic seasonal posts do not. "How much does a roof replacement cost in Illinois" and "how do I know if hail damage is covered" are real searches by people weeks away from hiring. Three abandoned posts from 2021 signal an inactive business more clearly than no blog at all.
