Marketing Strategy and Consulting for Distributors and Contractors

Most businesses do not need more tactics. They already have a website, a Google Business Profile, some ads and a social account somebody posts to when they remember.

Marketing strategy is deciding who a business sells to, what it says to them, which channels are worth the money and what happens each month of the year. A&B Consulting Group writes marketing plans and provides ongoing marketing consulting for distributors, contractors and local businesses. We are based in Burr Ridge, Illinois and serve Chicago and the western suburbs, and remotely for clients in 17 states.

What is missing is the plan that connects them — so every new vendor pitch sounds reasonable and the budget goes to whoever asked last. Strategy is the work of deciding, in writing, what the money is for.

Start with what is already working

The first step is an honest audit of what exists: the website, search presence, reviews, ads, email and the sales process, and — the part usually skipped — which of them is actually producing work.

That last question often has no answer yet, because lead source is not recorded anywhere it survives. Finding that out is itself useful. A plan built on guesses about what works will move budget in the wrong direction.

What a written plan contains

The plan is a document you can hand to a new hire or a vendor, not a slide deck that made sense in the room.

  • The customer segments that matter, what each needs to hear, and where they look for it
  • Channels in priority order, and the ones we recommend not spending on
  • A 12-month calendar built around your seasons, your vendors' programs and your sales targets
  • A budget by channel, including what co-op funds can cover
  • The measures that count — inquiries, booked jobs, orders and cost per result rather than impressions

Ongoing consulting

A plan does not run itself. With ongoing consulting you get a senior point of contact who meets with you monthly, or weekly in busy seasons, coordinates the work across our team and your other vendors, and moves budget toward what is working.

That includes the work that sits between departments: campaign briefs, branch and regional plans for distributors, marketing plans requested by manufacturers, and helping the sales team with materials and follow-up.

Plans for multi-branch distributors

A distributor's marketing happens at two levels at once — the company brand and each branch's local market. A plan that only covers head office leaves branch managers improvising; one that only covers branches produces twelve different-looking companies.

We build one plan for the company and break it down by branch or region, so each manager knows what is coming, when, and what they need to provide.

Why A&B

We run the channels we recommend, so the plan is written by people who know what each one costs to do properly. And because we are accountable for execution too, a plan that looks good and does not work is our problem, not a document we handed over and left.

We will also tell you when we are not the right fit for a piece of it, and when the constraint is not marketing at all — slow follow-up, pricing or capacity — because more spend will not fix those.

How It Works

What the engagement looks like.

1

Discovery

Your business, your market, your numbers and what you have already tried.

2

Audit

Your current marketing reviewed, with a written view of what is working, what is not and what cannot yet be measured.

3

Plan

A written 12-month plan with a calendar and a budget by channel.

4

Run and review

Carried out with you and reviewed monthly, with budget moved toward what produces work.

Investment

Priced to the scope of the work.

Available as a one-time engagement — audit plus written plan — or as an ongoing monthly retainer.

What moves the number:

  • One-time plan or an ongoing monthly engagement
  • Number of locations or branches the plan covers
  • How many channels are in scope
  • How often you want to meet
  • Whether execution is included or run in-house

FAQs

Marketing Strategy — questions we get asked

Do we have to use A&B to carry out the plan?

No. Some clients take the plan and run it in-house; most have us run part of it. The plan is yours either way.

How is this different from an account manager?

An account manager runs the services you bought. Strategy decides which services you should be buying in the first place — including telling you when one of ours is not worth it for you.

We have several branches. Do we need a plan for each?

You need one plan with branch-level detail. We build the company plan and break it down by branch or region, so each manager knows what is coming and when.

How soon do we get a plan?

Most written plans are delivered three to four weeks after the discovery call, depending on how quickly data and access come through.

What if we cannot tell which marketing works today?

That is common, and it is the first thing the plan fixes. Lead source has to be captured and carried into your CRM before any channel can be judged fairly.

Let's talk about your marketing strategy.
