Website Maintenance and Care Plans

Websites do not stay finished. Plugins fall behind, a theme update breaks the contact form and nobody notices for three weeks, the hours on the site are last year's, and the SSL certificate expires on a Saturday.

Website maintenance is the ongoing work of keeping a site updated, secure, backed up and current after it launches. A&B Consulting Group maintains WordPress, WooCommerce and Next.js sites for contractors, distributors and local businesses on monthly care plans, including sites we did not build. We are based in Burr Ridge, Illinois and serve Chicago and the western suburbs, and remotely for clients in 17 states.

None of it is dramatic on its own. Together it is how a good site becomes a liability — ranked lower, trusted less, and quietly producing fewer inquiries. A care plan is the boring fix: one team, a schedule, and somebody who already knows your site.

The failure nobody notices is the expensive one

A site that is down gets noticed in an hour. A contact form that stops sending gets noticed when somebody asks why leads dried up — often weeks later, after every inquiry in between went nowhere.

That is why monitoring covers the form, not just the homepage. We test that submissions actually arrive, because a site that loads perfectly and drops every lead is worse than one that is visibly broken.

What a care plan covers

The same list applies whatever the platform. What changes is how much of it a WordPress site needs compared with a custom build.

  • Core, plugin and theme updates on a schedule, checked before and after so an update does not take the site down
  • Security — malware scanning, login hardening and prompt patching when a vulnerability is published
  • Automatic off-site backups, and restores tested rather than assumed
  • Uptime and contact-form monitoring
  • Content changes — hours, staff, photos, promotions and new pages — by email
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals checked after every significant change
  • Broken links, redirects, sitemap and Search Console errors found and fixed
  • A monthly summary of what was updated, what was fixed and what we recommend next

WordPress, WooCommerce and Next.js

Many of our clients are on WordPress, often with Elementor or WooCommerce. Others are on the custom Next.js sites we build. We maintain both, on the platform they are built on, rather than insisting everything be rebuilt first.

WordPress needs the most attention because it depends on plugins written by other people, each updating on its own schedule. A store running WooCommerce adds payment and inventory to the list, and an update that breaks checkout costs money by the hour.

If a WordPress site has become a constant fight, we will say so plainly and show whether a rebuild would cost less over two years than continuing to patch it. Often it does not, and maintenance is the right answer.

Sites we did not build

Most care plans start on a site another agency or freelancer built. The first month is an audit: what is installed, what is out of date, what is insecure, where the backups are — if there are any — and who has admin access.

You get the findings in writing before we change anything. The urgent items get fixed first, and then the site moves onto the regular schedule.

You own it

The site, the domain and the hosting stay in your accounts, and you keep admin access the whole time. If you leave, there is nothing to hand back, because nothing was ever held.

How It Works

What the engagement looks like.

1

Audit

Hosting, software versions, plugins, backups and access inventoried, with a short written report before anything changes.

2

Stabilize

Urgent items first — outdated software, missing backups, broken forms and expired certificates.

3

Maintain

Scheduled updates, monitoring and content changes as you need them.

4

Report

A monthly summary of what was done, what was found and what is coming up.

Investment

Priced to the scope of the work.

Monthly, and quoted after the audit, because a well-kept site and a neglected one need very different amounts of work in month one.

What moves the number:

  • Platform — WordPress, WooCommerce or a custom build
  • Size of the site and number of plugins or integrations
  • Whether it runs e-commerce or online ordering
  • How many content changes you expect each month
  • How much clean-up the first audit turns up

FAQs

Website Maintenance — questions we get asked

Do we need a care plan if the site is new?

Yes. Updates start the week a site launches, and a new site is the cheapest one to keep healthy. Waiting until something breaks means paying for the repair and the neglect at the same time.

Can you maintain a site another agency built?

Yes, and most of our care plans started that way. We audit it first and send you the findings before we change anything.

What counts as a content change?

Text, images, hours, staff, promotions and small additions to existing pages. New sections, new templates and new features are quoted separately so the monthly fee stays predictable.

Who owns the site and the hosting?

You do. We work inside your accounts and you keep admin access throughout.

What happens if the site gets hacked?

We clean it, restore from a backup if needed, close the hole that let it happen, and tell you in writing what happened and what changed.

Should we just rebuild instead?

Sometimes. If the site is constantly breaking, slow on mobile, or missing the pages people search for, a rebuild can cost less over two years than patching. If it is sound, maintenance is cheaper and we will say so.
