Roofing is the trade where mobile matters most, because roofing demand is frequently urgent. A homeowner discovers a leak, or a hailstorm passes through, and the search happens immediately — from a phone, often while standing outside looking at the damage.

Across the roofing sites we manage, well over seventy percent of traffic is mobile, and it spikes higher during storm response. If your site was designed on a desktop and checked on a phone as an afterthought, you are getting the majority of your traffic wrong.

Google Indexes Your Mobile Site, Not Your Desktop Site

This is the part that catches roofers out. Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning the mobile version of your site is the version it crawls and ranks. Your desktop site is not what determines your rankings.

The practical consequence: if your mobile site hides content, loads a stripped-down version, or has usability problems, those problems affect your rankings for every visitor including desktop ones. Content that only appears on desktop effectively does not exist as far as ranking is concerned.

Core Web Vitals are also measured on mobile field data. A site that scores well on a desktop test and poorly on a phone is a site with a ranking problem, and the desktop score is not the one that counts.

Mobile Visitors Convert Differently

A desktop visitor researches. They open several tabs, compare contractors, read reviews, maybe fill out a form and wait for a reply. Their session is long and considered.

A mobile visitor with an active leak wants to talk to somebody now. They are not comparing five roofers — they are calling the first one who makes it easy. That is a completely different conversion path, and it needs to be designed for deliberately rather than inherited from the desktop layout.

Which means the phone number is the primary conversion element on mobile, not the form.

Click-to-Call Is the Single Highest-Value Fix

Your phone number must be a tappable link. Written as a proper telephone link, one tap opens the dialer with your number already entered. This sounds trivial and it is routinely gotten wrong.

The failures we still find on roofing sites in 2026:

  • The phone number rendered as an image, so it cannot be tapped or read by search engines
  • Plain text that looks like a number but does nothing when tapped
  • The number only in the footer, requiring a full scroll to reach
  • A number so small it is hard to hit accurately
  • A contact form as the only visible action, with the phone number nowhere on screen

What should be true instead: a tappable number in the header on every page, a persistent sticky call button on mobile, the number repeated at the end of every service page, and for emergency or storm work, an unmissable call action in the first screen. If someone has decided to call you, the distance between that decision and a ringing phone should be one tap.

Mobile Forms Need to Be Short

Every field you add reduces completion, and on a phone the drop-off is much steeper than on desktop. Typing on glass is tedious, and a form asking for street address, roof age, and preferred contact window will be abandoned partway through.

Ask for name, phone, and a one-line description of the problem. That is enough to call them back, and the call is where you gather everything else. If you must include email, keep it optional.

Then handle the mechanics correctly: proper input types so the phone keypad appears for phone fields, large tap targets, labels that stay visible rather than placeholder-only fields that vanish as soon as typing starts, and inline validation that flags a mistake immediately instead of after submission. A photo upload field is worth considering for damage assessment — homeowners are already looking at the problem with a camera in their hand.

Speed Matters More on Mobile

Mobile connections are slower and less consistent than office wifi, and mobile processors work harder to render heavy pages. A site that loads acceptably on your desktop can be genuinely unusable on a phone with two bars.

Roofing sites are especially prone to this because of photography. Before-and-after galleries are your strongest sales asset and also the most common cause of slow pages, since photos come straight off a phone at full resolution. Properly sized and compressed images look identical to the visitor and load in a fraction of the time. Test It Like a Customer Would

Stop evaluating your site from your desk. Pick up your phone, leave the wifi, and use cellular data. Then run the actual task: find your site, find your phone number, and try to request a quote.

Count the taps. Time it. Notice every moment of friction — a popup you cannot close with a thumb, text you had to zoom to read, a form field that pulled up the wrong keyboard. Then hand your phone to someone unfamiliar with the site and watch where they hesitate without helping them. That five-minute exercise will tell you more than any report.

Do the same on your two closest competitors. If their mobile experience is smoother than yours, that difference is showing up in both of your lead numbers.

What Fixing It Is Worth

Mobile improvements compound in a way desktop work does not, because mobile is the majority of your traffic and it is what Google indexes. A faster, easier mobile site ranks better, converts a higher share of the traffic it gets, and captures storm surges instead of losing them to a loading spinner.

For roofers this is not incremental. Storm response is the difference between a strong year and an average one, and storm traffic is almost entirely mobile and almost entirely impatient.
